Protecting Your Barbeque Grill Covers

A thin layer of chromium oxide protects the stainless steel from corrosion. This film forms when oxygen combines with chromium, but dirt and debris on the surface interrupt this process. In years past, the grill would be put away after summer was over, but these days it is common for those who love to grill to do it year-round. Because the grill is not spending any downtime in the garage, it is more vulnerable to the elements. Stainless steel is actually quite resilient, provided it is kept free from dirt and debris. Even if you are constantly using your grill, consider purchasing a polyester or vinyl cover to protect the stainless steel finish.

A cover, in conjunction with regular removal of marinade splashes—-which can be quite acidic—-will keep your grill looking as great as it cooks. Step 1

Sketch a simple picture of the shape of your charcoal or gas grill. Although you will measure the dimensions later, taking a basic picture of the grill to the store will help you find not only the right size but the right shape as well.

Step 2

Measure the grill height from the top to the ground in inches, including the chimney height if you have a smoker-type grill.

Step 3

Hold the tape measure to one side from the back of the grill to the front handle and write down the width.

Step 4

Measure the grill length from the edge of one side to the other side, including shelves and side burners.

Step 5

Shop for covers that are the same or are an inch or two larger than the dimensions of your charocal or gas grill.

Step 6

Check the package illustration to be sure the cover is the same shape as your grill. If you have a shelf or side burners on both sides of the grill, then the cover will need to be in that same trapezoid shape.

Draw a rough sketch of your grill shape. Grill covers are sold both by size and by shape, so you want to a match the cover to the grill as closely as possible. For example, if your grill has shelves or racks on both sides, the trapezoid shape is different than the profile of a grill with only a single shelf on one side.

Step 2

Measure the height of the grill from the ground to the tallest point.

Step 3

Measure the length of the grill at the widest points, typically from the side edge of one shelf to the side edge of the other.

Step 4

Measure the width of the grill from the back of the appliance to the front, including the protruding lift handle on the grill cover.

Step 5

Write down the measurements as height by length by width.

Step 6

Look for covers manufactured in the same shape as your grill (illustrations are on the packages), then buy a cover that meets or exceeds your grill dimensions.
